Nach Einführung in die Begriffswelt von „Geschichtspolitik“, „Erinnerungskultur“ und „Erinnerungsort“ sowie einem kurzen Überblick über den langen Weg bis zur Erlangung der staatlichen Unabhängigkeit der Ukraine wird die aktuelle Geschichtspolitik des Landes zwischen 1991 und dem Ende der Präsidentschaft PETRO POROŠENKO’s im Frühjahr 2019 analysiert. Dazu werden zunächst drei die ukrainische Erinnerungskultur grundlegend prägende Narrative in ihrer Genese, Entwicklung und Wirkung vorgestellt: das „Postulat der Kontinuität ukrainischer Geschichte“, das „Opfernarrativ vom Holodomor als Genozid am ukrainischen Volk“ und das „National-ukrainische Narrativ“.
